Of Montreal @ Roseland Ballroom - Oct 13, 2007

I'll take care of you if you take care of me

That's how Of Montreal said good bye last night at their biggest show in the city (and my third to date). It's sad for me cause this might have been the last time I could get to see them at a decent venue, but great for them because their so deserved success has finally arrived.

Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? is still one of my top 5 albums this 2007 and if you haven't listened to it carefully I urge you to do so. But probably you have, and you are now an Of Montreal fan, otherwise you wouldn't be reading this, right? Anyway, I think each of the five or six songs they played from this wonderful album last night sounded finally as excellent (but differently) as they sound on record. Gronlandic Edit was awesome and the best one this time for me... sounded as dancy as it is supposed to be. If only Kevin had played The Past is a Grotesque Animal as he did last time he played Irving Plaza, my night would have been complete. Instead we heard a couple of new songs. I think they were ok... hopefully they'll work on them before the new record comes out on October 2008.

The rest of songs they played are songs they have excelled playing them so many times in the past tho that I wasn't surprised. That doesn't mean I didn't shake my ass like everybody else. Lots of Sunlandic Twins, and surprisingly this time, lots of Satanic Panic in the Attic, made all the kids dance to Kevin and his gang. Because that's what was in attendance last night at Roseland... hundreds of kids. Man, Of Montreal has become ridiculously famous this year with the teenagers! They were all there (and with their parents).

I've seen Of Montreal three times since I got to know their music a couple of years ago and I think Kevin is conscious that there are some obsessive people out there, like me, who goes to see him every time the band comes around because they don't do exactly the same theatrical stuff that characterizes their show. They vary. This time Kevin now had an awesome light up stage with a sort of podium for each of the members, that was used to tell us different stories featuring a humanized tiger, his brother dressed in black tight pants, and a couple of guys having coffee when they were not freaking out to an Of Montreal song. Like The Flaming Lips, Kevin should think in a Broadway show!

I didn't think I was going to have a better Of Montreal show than the ones I had already, but I was wrong. It didn't even matter I was at Roseland Ballroom, Of Montreal ruled. [photos of the show]

Were you at the show? How did you like it?

Nice review! I recorded the show and have posted direct download on my site. I agree that the stage show was much more elaborate than the Irving Plaza show (which is also recorded and available on my site). The setlist was also has more old material instead of 90% Hissing Fauna (which isn't a bad thing--its just good to get variety).

I was at the show- as far as Of Montreal goes, it was phenomenal...as usual. But the majority of the crowd was really lame, a bunch of rude, snotty hipster-wannabees.

Good they were not around me and I hope I am not one of them ;)
